It is mind-boggling to think about how many little things babies need. Bibs, burp cloths, all types of onesies, pajamas, and the list goes on and on and on!!!! So today we are sharing how we managed to organize all of our dressers when the little ones were born. Since Nina is literally days away from starting all over again, it seems like the perfect time to let you all into our organizing madness! To start with, all three of us used the Ikea Malm 6 drawer dresser. Lots of drawers and lots of space. But another great thing is that Ikea sells drawer organization systems that fit perfectly in their furniture. Which brings us to the next great find – Ikea’s Skubb boxes which also come in a set of 6 – 2 large, 2 medium and 2 small and are only $8!!!
So once we had those two main things in place, the next step is folding those little tiny clothes! Here are some of the methods we used through the first year, after which the clothes start to get too big for this system to work! We all are a little compulsive about having clothes in neat piles, so this system worked to help us achieve just that!
For the onesies, we use a method of folding into thirds – the first fold at the hips and the second fold to match the edge. This works for all onesies and pajamas. For the undershirts we just folded the arms in and then folded them in half and stacked them.
For the bibs we used a method of folding the neck part in and then in half (helps them all stack nicely too). The socks we fold one in one so it was easier to find pairs (except when your washer/drier eats one), and for the swaddle blankets we just fold them all in the same way so that they stacked nicely.
Okay, so once we have nice piles of sorted items, it is time to figure out what to put where.
What made the most sense to us was to keep clothing on one side (onesies, pajamas, socks, mittens, hats, clothes, etc) and then every day items on the other side (bibs, burp cloths, swaddles, washcloths, etc). We filled the boxes first and then put them into the drawers accordingly.
Using this system of putting the clothes on the side makes it easier to see what you have and where it is. It makes it MUCH easier to keep the system going. You can replicate this method in each of the drawers for whatever else you need to organize for the baby (crib sheets, towels, changing pad covers/liners, etc). Lastly, organize whatever you need for diaper changes (lord knows there are many many manyyyy of those in the first few months) and you are just about ready to rock and roll (there are some smaller pockets inside this caddy where Nina put Q-Tips, a baby nail file, and a baby hair comb).
