It is no secret that we are all about sharing our culture and traditions when it comes to raising the kiddies. We are constantly looking for ways to encourage the little ones to learn about our heritage. We recently were approached by an amazing company called “Notes from Grandma” and we can’t get enough of her! Check out an exclusive interview with Rupali Drewek, the creator and author of Notes from Grandma on her amazing product.
Tell us a little about the formation of Notes from Grandma.
My business idea started when I realized that my own children (ages 7,8) knew very little about the Indian culture. I started researching easy ways to teach children about Indian culture but there was very little available on the Internet. The information that I found was lengthy and not appropriate for elementary age children. I wondered if other people were also concerned about their native culture fading over time. I wanted to find a unique and interesting way for children to learn about their heritage. I thought it would be novel to have personalized letters mailed to children each month discussing a topic related to the Indian culture. The goal being that by the end of the year each child would have built up a substantial amount of knowledge about Indian culture. Each letter is easy to read, interesting, and educational.
Who is your target audience?
My target audience is second generation Mexican Americans, Chinese Americans, and Indian Americans interested in teaching their children the rich traditions and history that define their cultures. I think all adults and children would learn new things from the lettersl. I certainly learned new things while writing them!
What kind of topics do the Notes cover?
Topics covered by the notes include explanations about holidays such as Diwali, Holi, Rashtrapati Bhavan/Republic day, Karva Chauth, Navratri, and Rakshabandhan. They also include topics regarding historical figures like Gandhi, Rabindarnath Tagore, Mother Teresa, and Neru. I also have included important topics such as geography, the meaning behind the Indian flag, influential Indian inventions, and the importance of respecting your elders. At the end of each letter, there are some questions about the topics to foster discussion, or an activity. Each letter has several colorful pictures embedded within the text.
Why remain on paper and not to the more popular digitalized world?
The digitalized world is indeed very efficient. There is, however, something exciting about receiving something personalized in the mail. It might, actually, be the only experience our children have with snail maiI. I chose to use personalized letters to teach children because they are timeless, and they honor tradition. They show the sentiment of caring, and create lasting memories.
